Grass Stains

We took our burden

Right across that highway

Late summer breeze

Blowing you ahead of me

We took it away

Running straight for the trees

Falling, grass stains on my knees

We took it away

You know I thought I saw the midnight sun

I thought a brand new day had begun

Bringing hope to everyone

But I’d just come out of a dream

And I'd awakened to find

The beams from headlights dancing on the ceiling

Off in the distance a church bell peeling

And I'd been dreaming

Of when we

Took our Burden

Right across that highway

Late summer breeze

Blowing you ahead of me

We took it away

Running straight for the trees

Falling, grass stains on my knees

We took it away

I drove north for the boundary

Past endless factories

Stretching for miles on each side of me

Then like something out of a dream

I turned and I saw

Waves of tall grass blowing in fields

All that mystery suddenly revealed

It got me thinking

Of when we

Took our burden

Right across that Highway

There's a scene of you and me

Like something that's meant to be

Floating around in my memory

You leading me through the fields

And pointing towards

Clouds like mountains low on the horizon

Off in the distance

But I kept my eyes on you

Because I was thinking

That we should

Take our burden

Right across that highway

Late summer breeze

Blowing you ahead of me

We took it away

Running straight for the trees

Falling, grass stains on my knees

We took it away

By that church at the side of the highway

Drowning in sunlight

We were drowning in sunlight

You leading me through green fields of clover and sunlight

We took it away
